Secrets To Successful Wireless Network Security

Network security is an important part of any computer network. There are different security options and solutions you can opt for your network, of which one of them is wireless network security. Of the lot, wireless network security is a bit difficult to roll out, secure and manage even to a savvy network administrator. As a result wireless network security issues are always at the fore of the mind of any certified information system security professional.

Remember that there is always someone out there with a receiver, trying to pick up an unsuspecting person's wireless local area network. With this, they can collect some sensitive information that leads to identity theft and the theft of proprietary business information. This is why you have to have a security enabled wireless network in your business at all times. And the situation is much more serious in WIFI zones and Internet enabled local areas where ad hoc devices are used just to capture such secure information.

Security on wireless network - even mobile systems - is important because wireless network is easily exploited as airwaves is used for communication. Spammers find it easy to fill the net with junk mail because of wireless networks. While thinking of wireless network security, it is necessary to focus more on threats to the network.

The most likely problems associated with wireless networks are rogue access points and the use of mobile devices without the right security precautions. Then of course, there are malicious hacking attempts and denial of service attacks that have to be added to the list of reasons for the need of a wireless network security setup. The problem is also existent in a business with uses computers on a LAN network.

Make it a point to set up the wireless access or router point with the help of a wired client. Once this is set, your network password has to be changed to something that is difficult for potential hackers to guess. Install 128-bit Wired Equivalency Privacy (WEP) encryption on both your access point and on your network card and change its key entries periodically. And if your computer does not support 129-bit WEP encryption, it means you have to replace the system as WEP is a basic security protection which provides at least some protection to your system.

Altering the factory default SSID of your access or router point to some difficult to identify string is an important part of wireless network security. Once this is done, your computer has to be initiated so that it connects to this configured SSID by default. Always ignore and block off any anonymous Internet requests and pings and disable all forms of P2P connections. Instead, enable MAC filtering features as it contributes to the security on your network.

In addition to enabling MAC filtering, enabling a firewall on the network router or access point for each computer in the network offers effective wireless network security. You are sure to get updates on router and access point firmware; make it a point to update them whenever your receive updates for them.

All physical routers have to be hidden so that an unknown person cannot reset any settings. It is better to place the physical router somewhere in the middle of the business, and not near windows so that others from outside don't receive the signals. By maintaining these points, and settings, you can effectively prevent unwanted intrusions by intruders on all your private matters and data.

Choosing the right wireless network security software products and tools should not be taken lightly. Be wired, but not wired with vulnerabilities. Look at specialized products from McAfee, NetScreen 5GT, etc. to secure your wireless appliance.
